Are there parallel universes?
The whole universe around us is full of a subtle
inner structure. This all-pervasive property is the multiverse
which contains many universes like ours interacting
only through quantum interference
According to Richard Feinman's interpretation of Quantum Theory,
the universe doesn't have just a unique single history.
Instead, the universe has every single possible history,
each with its own probability

What practical designs have been suggested?
The wormhole time machine by Professor Kip Thorne
He was asked to look into the idea by his friend Carl Sagan
who then used a wormhole as a plot device in his novel 'Contact'

Professor Frank Tipler suggested that you could use an incredibly dense,
spinning cylinder that was about 100 km long and 10 km wide
The cylinder would have to be incredibly strong and rigid
so that it did not get squashed by its own gravity and didn’t
get torn apart by the centrifugal forces it would experience
when spinning.
Tipler pointed out these were 'just' practical problems
which might be overcome by sufficiently advanced technology.
To use a Tipler Time Machine, you would leave Earth in a spaceship
and travel to where the cylinder was spinning in space. When you
were close enough to the cylinder, where the space-time is most warped,
you would orbit around it a few times and then fly back to Earth,
arriving back in the past. How far back in the past would depend
on how many times you went round the cylinder. During your journey,
your watch would always work as normal, going forward.
Tiplers work suggested that this could be done using a spinning black hole
or neutron star. There are pulsars that have been observed which are spinning
at a rate fast enough. However, the mathematics is not really conclusive
as to whether such stars could be used for time travel or whether
we would need to pile up a few of them on top of each other to form a cylinder

However, other apparently more reasonable
solutions that allow time travel, have since been found.
A particularly interesting one contains two cosmic strings,
moving past each other at a speed very near to,
but slightly less than, the speed of light. Cosmic strings
are a remarkable idea of theoretical physics, which science
fiction writers don't really seem to have caught on to. As
their name suggests, they are like string, in that they have
length, but a tiny cross section. Actually, they are more
like rubber bands, because they are under enormous
tension, something like a hundred billion billion billion tons.
A cosmic string attached to the Sun would accelerate it
naught to sixty, in a thirtieth of a second. Cosmic strings
may sound far-fetched, and pure science fiction, but
there are good scientific reasons to believe they could
have formed in the very early universe, shortly after
the Big Bang. Because they are under such great tension,
one might have expected them to accelerate to almost
the speed of light."
